Curiosity 1: wine helps memory
Some curiosities of wine focus on health, according to several studies carried out on the antioxidant benefits of wine and its polyphenols on health, wine is related to memory: responsible consumption of wine helps improve memory thanks to a compound found in red grapes, more specifically in the skin. This compound is called resveratrol. Supplements that contain it help improve short-term memory. What’s more, polyphenols from wine help prevent cognitive decline and, for example, have been shown to be effective in fighting dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. New research, developed by Danish scientists, indicates that the consumption of two or three glasses of red wine daily reduces the risk of death by up to 77% in patients diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s.
Curiosity 2: the wine at first is colorless
Indeed, although it is hard to believe, wine is colorless at first. The color arises from the maceration, in the skins (pigments of the skin of the grapes) and other plant cells. During fermentation, the color of a wine originates. Our Segura Viudas Garnatxa obtains its intense red color at that moment.
Curiosity 3: the climate determines the character of the wine
The weather is a differentiating factor. The flavor of the wine is more powerful, it will have more alcohol and body when it is made from vineyards located in warm areas. On the other hand, it is more refreshing and acidic when the grape is grown in colder areas. The climate of our Heredad Segura Viudas is typical of the heart of Penedès, between the Cordillera Prelitoral and the small plains of the Mediterranean coast. It is a typically Mediterranean climate, that is, mild and warm.
Curiosity 4: how many grapes are needed for a bottle of wine?
To fill a standard 75cl bottle of wine, it is necessary to collect an average of 1kg of grapes. The average weight of a bunch is 250g, therefore four bunches would be needed for a bottle of wine.
Curiosity 5: where can you make wine?
The five continents of the world are wine producers, even in Antarctica there are vineyards. However, the main wine regions in the world are Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany and the USA in the northern hemisphere, and Argentina, Chile, South Africa, New Zealand or Australia in the southern hemisphere. All these regions are located in latitudes 30° to 50° in both hemispheres, where the climate is ideal for growing grapes.
