What is the sweetest Cava?

Conoce de la mano de Segura Viudas qué cava es más dulce, el cava Brut o el Semiseco.

As we explained in our blog post on types of Cava, there are different types of Cava depending on the amount of sugar added: Brut Nature (up to 3 gr/l), Extra Brut (up to 6 gr/l), Brut (6- 12 gr/l), Extra Dry (12-17 gr/l), Dry (17-32 gr/l), Semi-dry (32-50 gr/l) and Sweet (more than 50 gr/l). The latter would therefore be the sweetest type of Cava.

In the case of Segura Viudas, we offer quality and healthy products, that is why our sweetest Cavas are Brut and contain at most 9 grams of sugar per litre. We are talking about our iconic Segura Viudas Brut Reserva and the new and delicious Segura Viudas Brut Rosé. We will discover their characteristics.

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva has a dosage of 9 g/l. Fruit, freshness and complexity are the three main virtues that define it. According to our Winemaker Manel Quintana, Brut Reserva is especial for its elegant and persistent bubble. Gives off aromas of white, tropical and citrus fruits, and moderate floral notes. Its palate is exquisite, complex and tasty, with good acidity and lime and pineapple flavour.

Another option is Segura Viudas Brut Rosé, with the same dosage as Brut Reserva, this rosé Cava has an intense aroma of fruit, both on the nose and on the palate, bright colour and finesse. In the search for the perfect balance between fruit and aging, the blend for this rosé is made with three varieties of grapes: Trepat, Pinot Noir and Garnacha, each of which contributes its own particular characteristics. It surprises with its youthful fruity aromas of strawberry, currant and grenadine.

How to know if a Cava is sweet?

As the DO Cava indicates, to know if a Cava is sweet we must look at the dosage or expedition liquor is in charge of giving the final profile to the Cava. In a usual and basic way it is a mixture of base wine with sugar, but from it there are many possibilities of variation. A Cava will be more or less sweet depending on the amount of sugar contained in the expedition liquor of our Cava.

This amount will determine the style / type of Cava, from the driest (without added sugar), Brut Nature, to Sweet. Not forgetting the rest of the intermediate styles (Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Dry, Semi-dry) that add versatility in this drink and therefore more possibilities to play with gastronomy and the art of pairing.

Which one is sweeter, the Brut or the semi-dry Cava?

According to the Cava Regulatory Council, Brut Cava has a sweet entry that allows a greater amount of added sugar in the expedition liquor. The good acidity of the product makes this small amount of sugar hardly noticeable, only highlighting its virtues and adding to the range of Cavas one more possibility of pairing. It is ideal with Asian foods or with a touch of spice. Brut Cava is a great ally even for those meals that are difficult to pair with other wines. Its sugar content is up to 12 grams per litre.

As for Semi-dry Cava, it is a type of Cava that for years accompanied family meals due to its extreme versatility, but the touch of added sugar makes it the ideal companion for desserts. It contains 32 – 50 grams per litre of sugar.
