According to the DO Cava, the label is the visible identity of Cava. Beyond the design, the label on our bottle is what will allow us to know if we are dealing with a sparkling wine made using the traditional method protected by the Cava Denomination of Origin.

But not only this, we can also easily distinguish which product we are going to taste before the corkage. The aging or the sugar content, among others, in short, its profile and its origin.

Cava label information

Each winery personalizes the labels with the mandatory and optional information shown below:

  • Cava Denomination of Origin: those products that follow the rigorous controls of the Regulatory Council and that have its approval can only use the mention Cava on the labels.
  • The brand: Distinctive sign with which the producer identifies his Cava.
  • Cava Category: Cava de Guarda if the minimum aging is 9 months and Cava de Guarda Superior if the aging period is greater than 18 months: Reserva (from 18 months), Gran Reserva (from 30 months) , Paraje Qualified (from 36 months).
  • The type of Cava: Specifies the type of Cava and whether or not it has added sugar and in what quantity (dosage): Brut Nature, Brut, Extra Brut, Extra Dry, Dry, Semi Dry, Sweet.
  • Capacity: Indicator of the nominal volume of the bottle. Cava can only be marketed in formats of: 37.5; 20; 18.75; 75; 150 and 200 cl.
  • The manufacturing company: Trade name or trade name of the manufacturer.
  • Alcohol content: The figure that appears refers to the amount of alcohol, in volume, in relation to the total content of the bottle. To be Cava this figure can only be between 11 and 12.5% ​​vol.
  • Origin: In wines with PDO such as Cava, the country of origin must appear in a mandatory way, in this case Spain.
  • Other information that is not mandatory but that helps us to know more about Cava:
  • Own harvest: It refers to the origin of the grape, in this case from a farm owned by the producer. Own grape.
  • Vintage: Indicates that 85% of the grapes used are from the indicated vintage. Mandatory from the Reservation category.
  • Colour of the wine: Names the particular colour of the bottled Cava. It can be White, White from white grapes (also Blanc de blancs), White from red grapes (Blanc de noirs), Rosé.
  • Awards or decorations.
  • Disgorgement date.
  • Tasting note.

What does the label tell us?

The obligation to put certain information on the label, in addition to informing the consumer, also serves as a guarantee to distinguish Cava from other sparkling wines and to choose the type we want at all times.
