How does climate change influence wine?

wine making process

Discover with Segura Viudas how climate change influences wine and how it affects its quality.

Climate change is a problem that affects all areas of the world: food, temperatures, daily life and even wine production are some of the aspects and activities that have had to be modified due to the damage caused to the environment.

Commitment to biodiversity

In this article, we want to talk to you about some of the conditions that have changed in the cultivation of wines due to climate deterioration. At Segura Viudas we are committed to biodiversity and respect for our roots, our essence, and for this reason we strive to protect the landscape, flora, fauna and the environment that surrounds us.

More than a technical process, viniculture is an art that must be done with the greatest possible care. That is why at Segura Viudas we evaluate and perfect, as much as possible, all the factors involved in the cultivation of grapes. However, if there is something that is decisive for the correct development of the grape, it is the climate. The temperature and all other weather conditions directly influence the result of the grape cultivation.

How does climate change affect the quality of wine? Lose property?

Wines are affected by climate change in the following aspects:

  • More degrees of alcohol: A higher alcohol content is one of the consequences of climate change, and this is because the ripening of the grape is accelerated by continuous and direct exposure to sunlight. In addition, it is possible that a higher concentration of sugars occurs produced by the same causes. Undoubtedly, high temperatures of recent years and drought interfere with the time the grapes really need to mature.
  • Less tannins: Decrease in the tannin levels of the grapes. Tannins are phenolic elements found in different parts of the grape. Its mission in the preparation of wines is to give it that bitter taste and smell that is characteristic of some types of wine.
  • Higher PH: The decrease in acidity is another factor that is closely linked to low levels of tannins. This, in turn, causes the wine to be clearer.

Undoubtedly, climate change is one of the factors that has brought the most negative consequences in many areas, and wine is no exception.
