Rosado Segura Viudas

Premium rose wines are a growing trend all over the world and now Segura Viudas is offering one too. This is a blend of Tempranillo and Merlot, two varieties which have been growing in Catalun- ya for many years and which are very well adapted to our land.

Winter was very dry, with mild temperatures, except for some very welcome snow on 4th February. Spring accentuated the drought conditions, with average temperatures higher than normal. In July there was a heat-wave, with top temperatures of 36ºC and an average of 26ºC. These extreme conditions at that time brought about, in the early ripening varieties a very rapid develo- pment, with good sugar concentration and a drop in acidity. As a result, picking started some 5-7 days earlier than in 2014.

Mechanical harvest at night, and brought to the winery in a double bottomed trailer, specifically desig- ned so that the free run juice is always separate from the rest of the grapes. This free run juice is only used for this wine, so that the colour extraction is minimal. The juice is chilled to 12ºC, undergoes a natural static decantation and is then fermented at 16ºC using our own selected yeasts. Following fermentation the wine is held in contact with its fine lees for just one month until bottling.

Medium intensity, with aromas of pineapple, peach and strawberry over a floral background of violets. Surprising, because from its colour, we might expect a light style of wine, but instead it offers full of flavour, ripe fruit palate, and long finish and fresh acidity.

Merlot and Tempranillo combining to deliver fruit and refreshment with their own particular perso- nalities; this is a modern rosado delivering lifestyle. Colour is important in pairing it, so salmon is a given, but also perfectly at home with Mediterranean fried fish, with Mexican cuisine with its touch of spice. Lovely with international pasta dishes, fish and vegetable salads and ideal with ceviches. Grilled chicken al fresco, at sunset. Bring it on!
